Camp Lejeune

Secret Invasion

Camp Lejeune, a large U.S. Marine Corps base in Jacksonville, North Carolina, becomes a secure investigative foothold in the response to the sligger threat. Its grounds include a Navy-run medical building with an isolation room, where the team examines the dead creature recovered from Emerald Isle before carrying its inquiry into the surrounding coastal landscape.

Base and Medical Facilities

The team enters through Camp Lejeune’s main gate after a sand-colored Humvee arrives to meet them. First Lieutenant Santos Gomez completes introductions and verifies their clearance orders before leading them onto the base. Its scale and military infrastructure are emphasized: Camp Lejeune provides live-fire ranges, tactical landing zones, and beaches for amphibious assault drills. Although the base is controlled by the Marine Corps, the visitors are taken to a Navy-run building, the Naval Medical Center.

Ron follows the Humvee down Brewster Boulevard to the medical facility. From there, the group rides an elevator to the second floor and proceeds along a white-tile hallway to an isolation room at the rear of the building. The sequence of checkpoints and doors places the specimen inside a controlled medical setting, apart from the open terrain where the creature was encountered.

The Emerald Isle Specimen

Inside the isolation room, the sligger’s sulfuric odor is immediately recognizable to Josh and Denise. The dead animal lies on an examination table at the center of the room. Its presence brings the couple back to their earlier confrontation with the creatures on Wrecker Island: even dead and contained, it renews their dread of what they have faced.

The team spends several hours examining the dissected specimen. They study its anatomy, remove eggs already developing inside it, and take organ samples, gathering what information they can before turning to the place where it was killed. Camp Lejeune therefore functions not simply as a secure stop for the carcass, but as the point where field evidence is opened up for direct examination.

From Examination to Field Search

After the examination, Ron drives the group out of Camp Lejeune and onto Highway 24. Following a forty-minute journey, they cross the causeway to Bogue Banks and reach the outskirts of Emerald Isle. Their destination is a house beside Emerald Isle Woods Park, near the site associated with the creature’s death. The transition from an isolation room to a wooded neighborhood extends the investigation from the animal’s body to the conditions and location of its encounter.

The base’s narrative role lies in this connection between military access, medical examination, and field investigation. Its controlled facilities let the team handle a dangerous specimen and recover developing eggs and biological samples; its position also makes it a practical launch point for searching nearby coastal ground. Camp Lejeune anchors the shift from confronting the sliggers as a remembered threat to examining one as physical evidence and tracing its presence back into the landscape.
